Earth Day: The Printing Industry Goes Green

Earth Day 2024

Earth Day is a time to focus on our planet's health and celebrate the steps we can all take towards a more sustainable future.

We’ve been championing Eco print for a long time!

When we launched our online eco-print platform in 2006 we were the only UK printer offing a 100% eco-printing option. As such we were called upon by the paper merchants and ink manufacturers to trial and test their products and consequently we were the first print company in the UK to switch to vegetable-oil based inks and to run all of our products on 100% recycled paper.

Why vegetable-oil based ink?

Traditional printing ink came packed full of petrochemicals that were bad for people and the environment. Ink made with a vegetable or soy base degrade more easily and release fewer chemicals into the environment whilst producing quality print results, which makes their adoption a no brainer!

The Power of Paper

Let's dispel a myth: paper is actually a very renewable resource.  When sourced from responsibly managed forests it contributes to a healthy ecosystem and takes care or the people and wildlife that call them home. Additionally, paper boasts an impressive recycling rate – the highest of any recovered product.

Recycled paper

It is believed that in the UK we use over 12.5 million tonnes of paper and we recycle around 80%. Much of the paper that enters the recycling stream is used to make materials for packaging which has seen a big move towards using recyclable elements due to pressure from the government and consumers. However, recycled paper still has a big role to play in the printing industry which allows customers and businesses to significantly reduce their environmental footprint.

Going a step further

At A Local Printer we offer a range of carbon offset papers to print with and are signed up with carbon offset provider Ecologi, which allows us to go a step further by carbon offsetting our business and neutralize the environmental impact of our operation.

The Future of Sustainable Printing

Happily for us, the future of printing is undoubtedly sustainable.  Through the continuation of prioritizing recycling, reducing waste, adopting alternative materials, improving energy efficiency, and raising awareness the printing industry can minimize its impact on the environment and pave the way for a greener future.  So this Earth Day let's celebrate the ways print can be a powerful tool for communication while preserving our planet for generations to come.
