The Fab of Foil

The Fab of Foil

Eco foil, also known as eco-friendly foil or sustainable foil, refers to a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional foil used in various applications, including greeting cards.

Traditional foil is typically made from metallic materials, such as aluminium, and often involves resource-intensive and environmentally harmful processes.

Eco foil, on the other hand, is produced using sustainable materials or methods that have a reduced impact on the environment.

However, there remains a misconception that items that have had foil applied cannot enter the recycling stream. However, paper or board with foil applied to it can be re-pulped and therefore recycled. Similarly, paper or board with foil applied can be composted under commercial conditions.

The digital foil that we use has undergone rigorous certified testing to EN13432 standard which shows that the foil element had disintegrated by 99% after 12 weeks, easily reaching the biodegradable standard.

In terms of recycling, under controlled repulping tests the paper or board fibres are dispersed along with any inks and foils.  The test showed that, once transferred, the foil is so thin that it dissipates within the re-pulping process (based on a coverage of up to 80% being foil).

When buying your eco-printed greeting cards with foil elements and enhancements you can be certain that our cards remain fully recyclable and compostable - somthing that all of our printed products benefit from.  Happy foiling!
