A schoolboy from Findon enjoyed VIP treatment at the annual Worthing International Birdman event, after winning a competition to design an ultimate flying machine.

Edward Thomas, age 10, a student at St John the Baptist C of E Primary School in Findon, designed his ideal flying machine (pictured right), for the competition which was organised by local company, Just Printing, one of the sponsors for the event held on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 2014.

On the Saturday, Edward and his mother Francesca, joined Andy Simon from A Local Printer on the pier in Worthing to watch the Birdman competitors up close and personal. The sun was shining and records were broken as brave and daring individuals threw themselves off the platform into the sea below.

Edward commented:

“Watching the Birdman was brilliant! We got deckchairs really close by so could see everyone who entered really well. Some of them were dressed in silly outfits, but I liked the ones who had made their own glider wings the best. I think they were all brave, as the platform was very high and the sea must have been cold.

“I enjoyed watching the gliders that actually managed to fly rather than plummeting into the sea. It was really exciting to see if they might reach the 100m marker and win the £10,000 prize if they did.

“Thank you to A Local Printer for choosing me as the winner of their competition. I loved the Birdman and will enter and try to fly off the pier myself one day.”

Andy Simon added:

“It was great fun watching the Birdman on Saturday with Edward. He did such a great job designing his ultimate flying machine, it was nice to be able to congratulate him and enjoy the birdmen in action!

“Maybe in a few years’ time, if Edward is still keen to attempt to fly off the pier, he could represent A Local Printer. We could say he was our protégé!”
